Optimal Licensing Policy in Differentiated Industries
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper analyses the policy implications of licensing between producers of differentiated goods. We consider and compare two-part tariff, fixed fee, royalty and collusive licensing contracts. Under the optimal licensing policy, there will be no technology transfers if the innovation size is sufficiently small and degree of product differentiation is sufficiently low. On the other hand, licensing deals that involve drastic innovations are always socially desirable. In the limit, as product differentiation converges to zero, it becomes socially desirable to transfer drastic innovations only. The range of innovation sizes that is socially optimal to transfer increases as product differentiation increases. JEL Classification: D4; L41; O38

Innovation and licensing in models of product differentiation
In this paper we consider licensing of innovations in markets with differentiated products. We analyze models where firms compete in prices and are offered by an outsider innovator an innovation that increases the quality of their product. We examine the licensing policies of auction, fixed fee, linear royalty and their combination; the optimal number of licensees, the effect of the licensing p...
متن کاملLicensing to Vertically Related Markets
We analyse the problem of a non-producing patentee who licenses an essential process innovation to a vertical Cournot oligopoly. The vertical oligopoly is composed of an upstream and a downstream sector which may differ in their efficiency or, in other words, in the benefit they derive from the innovation. In this framework we characterise the optimal licensing contract in terms of the licensin...
متن کاملThe Optimal Licensing Contract in a Differentiated Stackelberg Model
This paper extends the work of Wang (2002) by considering a differentiated Stackelberg model, when the leader firm is an inside innovator and licenses its new technology by three options, that is, fixed-fee licensing, royalty licensing, and two-part tariff licensing. The main contributions and conclusions of this paper are threefold. First of all, this paper derives a very different result from...
متن کاملLicensing in the presence of competing technologies
In technology-based industries, many incumbent firms license their technology to other firms that will potentially compete with them. Such a strategy is difficult to explain within traditional models of licensing. This paper extends the literature on licensing by relaxing the widespread assumption of a ‘unique’ technology holder. We develop a model with many technological trajectories for the p...
متن کاملIn Search of a Rationale for Differentiated Environmental Taxes
Environmental tax schemes in OECD countries often involve tax rates differentiated across industrial, commercial and household sectors. In this paper, we investigate four potentially imprtant arguments for these deviations from uniform taxation: pre-existing tax distortions, domestic equity concerns, global environmental effectiveness, and strategic trade policy. Our primary objective is to asc...
